LinkedIn Tips & Tricks 1 of 5

Creating a professional profile is easy if you follow these steps…Regardless of whether you are currently looking for new opportunities or are secure in your current contract, LinkedIn is a powerful networking tool that can help you achieve your professional goals.

A hunting ground for head-hunters, HR managers and new businesses looking for partners or opportunities, LinkedIn can help you take advantage of these opportunities, so a professional profile is a must.

Unlike on Facebook, where profiles could be made up and are more suitable for personal networking rather than a professional one, LinkedIn encourages users to provide a highly professional look to their resume and/or profile on the networking site.

Have the right profile picture

The Good
Just as you would want to look your best when walking into a first interview, so you want your LinkedIn Profile Picture to make an impression. Having a high-quality, recent profile picture of yourself that appropriately describes your role in your industry will be the safest bet.

DO –

  • Smile with teeth
  • Dark-coloured suits, light coloured buttondowns
  • Head-and-shoulders, or head-to-waist photo
  • Asymmetrical composition
  • Unobstructed eyes
  • Face the camera
  • Bright background

The Bad
A bad profile picture can unwittingly create a negative impression of you before you’ve even had an opportunity to present your skills and accomplishments.

DON”T –

  • Photos from your wedding
  • Photos with your children/spouse/animals
  • Photos from longer than two years ago
  • Photos with any alcohol present in the photo
  • Photos from clubs/pubs
  • “Selfies” – photos taken with your phone by yourself
